Connect Claude Desktop to files on your Windows PC
Claude can only work with what you paste or upload into the chat — until you give it a way to reach your computer. This guide shows how to add Bridgerator as a custom connector in Claude Desktop (or on claude.ai), connect a Windows PC, and ask Claude to find, read and organize files there. The same steps work for a second PC: connect it too and Claude can address either one by name.
What you need
- A Claude account. The Free plan allows one custom connector, which is enough for Bridgerator. On Team and Enterprise an organization owner adds the connector once (Organization settings → Connectors) and members press Connect on their side.
- A Windows 10 or 11 PC that you own or are allowed to administer. No admin rights are needed.
- A free Bridgerator account. It is created on the spot when you sign in with Google or an e-mail address; the Free plan includes 10,000 tool calls a month.
Step 1. Add the connector in Claude
- In Claude Desktop (or on claude.ai) open Customize → Connectors.
- Press +, then Add custom connector.
- Paste the server URL and confirm:
https://mcp.bridgerator.recondeck.com/ mcp
You add the connector once. Because it belongs to your Claude account, it also appears in the Claude mobile app. Menu labels change now and then; look for "Connectors" and "Add custom connector".
Step 2. Sign in to Bridgerator
Press Connect next to the new connector. The Bridgerator sign-in page opens: continue with Google or use e-mail and a password. If you are new, the free account is created right there.
Step 3. Connect the PC
Claude reaches your computer through a small Windows program, the bridge. It connects out to the Bridgerator server, so no inbound ports are opened on your PC. Install it with the steps on the Claude page (the "Connect your PC" step), or, if you already have Node.js 22 or newer, with npm install -g bridgerator and then bridgerator.cmd setup. Use a normal window, not "Run as administrator". When a browser tab opens with a code, press Connect this computer.
Check it from the PC at any time:
bridgerator.cmd status
The first line should read running — online as <your PC>. If not, see troubleshooting.
Step 4. Ask Claude to do something on the PC
Open a new chat, check that Bridgerator is switched on in the tools menu, and try a request that names a folder exactly:
List what is in D:\Work\Reports with sizes and dates, newest first.
Find every PDF in Documents from this year that mentions "invoice" and list the file names.
Read the .md notes in Documents\Notes and write one summary with links to the source files.
Propose how to sort my Downloads folder by type. Show the plan first and don't move anything yet.
Claude asks before actions that change something, unless you allow them for the whole chat.
A second Windows PC
Run the same install on the other computer and sign in with the same Bridgerator account. Both PCs show up under the one connector, and you tell Claude which one you mean: "on the PC called OFFICE, find the newest file in D:\Backup". Bridgerator connects only the computers of the account you signed in with.
Claude Code
In a terminal add the server once for all your projects:
claude mcp add --transport http --scope user bridgerator https://mcp.bridgerator.recondeck.com/mcp
Then type /mcp in Claude Code, pick bridgerator → Authenticate and sign in. On a machine without a browser use a personal access key.
Keep it safe
- Nothing is restricted by default. If you want Claude limited to some folders, set a folder list, add read-only folders, or turn on confirmations on the PC — see which folders the AI can see.
- Simple deletes go to the Recycle Bin, and a file gets a copy before it changes, so "Undo AI changes" can put it back.
- The terminal runs with your Windows user's rights. If you do not need it, turn it off: running PowerShell safely.
- File contents and command output pass through the server in memory over TLS and are not stored. Details are on the security page.
